SBB and RDC Germany launch new night train connection from Basel to Copenhagen and Malm from April 2026

  • Direct overnight from Switzerland to Scandinavia
  • Ticket sales begin on 4 November 2025

From 15 April 2026, the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) in collaboration with RDC Germany will offer a new night train connection from Basel to Copenhagen and Malm. The new EuroNight will operate three times a week and expands Switzerland's international night train network with a direct connection to Scandinavia. Ticket sales will begin on 4 November 2025.

Direct overnight from Basel to Scandinavia

The new EuroNight will connect Switzerland with Denmark and Sweden from mid-April 2026 – three times a week in both directions and all year round.

  • Departure Basel SBB: Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 17:35
  • Arrival Malm: the following day at 9:35
  • Departure Malm: Thursdays, Saturdays, and Mondays at 18:57
  • Arrival Basel SBB: the following day at 11:30

The train offers around 350 seats in sleeper, couchette, and seating cars, including an accessible compartment and bistro car between Basel and Padborg. Intermediate stops will be made in Freiburg (Breisgau), Karlsruhe, Mannheim, Frankfurt Süd, Hamburg, Padborg, Kolding, Odense, Hoeje Taastrup, and Copenhagen Airport. A stop at Copenhagen Central Station is not planned for scheduling reasons; however, the city centre can be reached from Hoeje Taastrup or Copenhagen Airport in about 15 minutes by S-train.

Traveling environmentally friendly – sleeping to your destination

With the new EuroNight, SBB and RDC Germany strengthen the European night train network and create a comfortable, environmentally friendly alternative to flying. The connection opens the gateway to Scandinavia. From Malm, there are quick connections to Stockholm, Gothenburg, and other cities in Northern Europe.

The train covers over 1,400 kilometres through Switzerland, Germany, and Denmark to Sweden. The operation is carried out by RDC Germany, a private railway company with many years of experience in international night train services. "We are pleased to realise the first direct night train connection between Switzerland and Scandinavia together with SBB," says Markus Hunkel, Chief Executive Officer, RDC Germany. "This train offers our passengers a comfortable, environmentally friendly, and practical way to travel overnight. For us, it is an important step to further develop sustainable mobility in Europe."

Financial support from the Swiss Confederation

The operation of the new EuroNight will be financially supported by the Swiss Confederation under the CO2 Act. The existing framework conditions for night trains result in high costs and investments for rolling stock, tracks, and personnel – therefore, starting and establishing a new night train connection without state funding during the setup phase until 2030 is not feasible. The federal government has earmarked around 47 million CHF by 2030 to support international night train connections. Should the Swiss Parliament not release the funds, the connection may not be established. In this case, passengers will be informed in good time and any already booked tickets will be fully refunded.

Ticket sales from 4 November 2025

Tickets for the EuroNight Basel–Copenhagen–Malm will be available on 4 November 2025 via SBB Mobile, sbb.ch, and in SBB travel centres. Prices are based on existing night train offers from Switzerland and vary depending on comfort category, occupancy, and refund conditions.
