RDC Deutschland Group to continue night train service between Berlin – Hamburg – Stockholm
The company will continue to offer the established connections even after government funding in Sweden ends.
While the European night train landscape is undergoing change, the RDC Deutschland Group is focusing on continuity and responsibility. The company will continue to operate the successful Berlin – Hamburg – Stockholm night train connection even after government funding expires in summer 2026.
The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has announced that the current funding for year-round operation of the Hamburg – Stockholm route will end in summer 2026 and that the contract with SJ for the operation of the SJ EuroNight night train will not be renewed.
The RDC Deutschland Group regrets the end of the start-up funding, but sees it as an opportunity:
‘Together with our partner SJ, we have shown that international night trains can be operated successfully even in a challenging environment,’ says Markus Hunkel, Chief Executive Officer, RDC Deutschland. ‘This connection is an important link in the European night train network – and we will continue it.’
As one of the few railway companies in Germany specialising in night trains, RDC has the necessary experience and infrastructure to continue operating independently. This means that the connection remains an attractive, climate-friendly and comfortable alternative to air travel – especially at a time when sustainable mobility is gaining importance throughout Europe. For employees, this step means above all planning security. RDC Germany relies on its experienced teams and numerous partners who have successfully supported night train services over the past four years. At the same time, the company is aware that continuing operations will bring challenges. Night trains are cost-intensive, and competition with other operators and airlines remains fierce. However, RDC Germany is confident in its expertise, experience from ongoing operations and competitive product range.
‘We stand for entrepreneurial thinking in the railway sector,’ emphasises Hunkel. ‘When the market changes, we look for solutions. Our goal is to secure and further develop international night train connections like this one in the long term.’
The RDC Germany Group would like to express its sincere thanks to all employees and partners for their commitment, motivation and trust. Together, we will lead the Berlin–Hamburg–Stockholm night train into a stable and successful future – as a symbol of sustainable travel and a modern, connected Europe.
